Summary of 1st Public Workshop

The Town of Riverhead held a public workshop on its Comprehensive Plan Update at the Suffolk Theater on Saturday, April 22 at 10 AM. There were approximately 125 attendees. Links to a recording of the meeting, the presentation slides, and the summary notes are below.

At the meeting, the consultant team first presented an update on the planning process. They then provided an overview of issues and opportunities for a variety of topic areas. After the presentation, participants split up into smaller groups to discuss issues in more detail.

Feedback from participants will help to ensure that the Comprehensive Plan is representative of the community as a whole and that it includes realistic and publicly supported goals and objectives. There will be a second public workshop in the Fall and subsequent public hearings before the Plan is considered for adoption.

Focus Group Meetings (Video Recording)

A series of focus group meetings were held in May and June 2023 to discuss key issues with content experts in the community. These stakeholders included representatives from various boards and committees as well as department heads. A recording of each meeting can be found at the links below.

PUBLIC OUTREACH (2020-2022)

The Town and its previous consultant team completed public outreach, research, and analysis for the Comprehensive Plan between 2020 and 2022. The multi-faceted public engagement included a series of in-person and virtual meetings, a public survey, and online engagement.

The principal components of the outreach program included:

Interviews with Town and County officials and other stakeholders;
Four hamlet-focused public meetings
Five topic-focused public meetings;
a Public Survey;
a Social Pinpoint Interactive Map; and
Written/emailed comments and Comment Forms submitted to the Town’s project website

Comments and summaries from these various activities can be found below. The current phase of work (2023) includes a series of meetings with key stakeholders and two public workshops. The first workshop will be in March (date TBD), and the second will be in the fall, once recommendations are ready to discuss with the public. Stay tuned for updates.

This anonymous survey sought opinions on the issues and opportunities that are important to our future. All residents, business owners, and stakeholders were encouraged to participate.
